Overview

In this workshop, you’ll learn basic hand sewing skills and explore ways to manipulate existing garments and transform them into something new using various sewing techniques and tools such as resizing, rouching, applique, and patchwork. We’ll cover asymmetry in clothing design and how to deconstruct/reconstruct garments to make them one of a kind using existing button-down shirts as our blank canvases. We’ll also touch briefly on fast fashion and the waste that goes along with today’s apparel industry. Our final in-person session on November 20 will be a photo shoot and fashion show at the Bodecker Foundation featuring our new creations. No prior sewing experience necessary. For assistance with supplies or transportation to in person sessions please email jodi@bodeckerfound.org.

Suggested materials: one basic button-up dress shirt; fabric scissors; a few spools of thread; push pins; sewing needles; extra fabric scraps; seam ripper (optional); chalk or fabric pencils that wash off for dart marks, etc. (optional). Students will also receive a swag bag of scrap material and other embellishment supplies at the November 6 in person session.

Mondays and Weds 5-6:30pm via Zoom | November 3, 8, 10, 15, 17

Optional in-person sessions 11am – 2pm at the Bodecker Foundation 2360 NW Quimby Street | Saturdays November 6 and 20
